Egypt
The Egyptian national football team is governed by the Egyptian Football Association. In 1934, it became the first team from the African continent to take part in a World Cup, but was defeated 4-2 by Hungary in the first round. Egypt then qualified for the 1990 and 2018 World Cups, but failed in the preliminary round both times. From 1958 to 1970, the Egyptian national football team competed under the name United Arab Republic (jointly with Syria between 1958 and 1961).
Egypt won the first African Championship in 1957 and repeated the success in 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, making Egypt the sole record holder. In 2010, the team became the first to win the African Championship for the third consecutive time. In 1992, Egypt also won the Arab Cup title.
Winning a 3rd consecutive Africa Cup title allowed Egypt to rise 14 places in the FIFA World Ranking in February 2010, where they were ranked as the best African team until February 2011, when Egypt dropped to 3rd among African teams.
In Arabic, the Egyptian national football team is literally called the Egyptian Football Selection/National Team or Selection/National Team (muntachab) for short. In Egypt and abroad, the team, like Egyptian athletes in general, is also nicknamed the "Pharaohs".
