The Welsh national football team is the selection of the best football players from Wales. It achieved its greatest success in its only ever participation in a World Cup, the 1958 World Cup, when the team only lost 1-0 to Brazil in the quarter-finals.
The team qualified for the finals of a European Championship for the first time in 2016 and managed to advance to the semi-finals, which they lost 2-0 to eventual European champions Portugal. In 1976, Wales failed to reach the quarter-finals, which counted towards qualification at the time.
In July 2015, Wales reached the top ten of the FIFA World Ranking for the first time in history.
The Welsh national team crest is Gorau Chwarae Cyd Chwarae - Welsh for play best - play together.
Ryan Giggs took over as Welsh coach in mid-January 2018, with a contract until the 2022 World Cup. After Giggs was arrested over allegations of domestic violence and it later became clear that he would face legal action, Giggs' co-coach Rob Page took over as interim manager of the national team at the end of 2020.
